How does it look:

A quick-growing tree, with rounded crown, very variable in size, with straight stem, up to 27m/7m. Stem in favourable localities attains a large size, with tall, clean, cylindrical bole, having uniform girth, becomes fluted and buttressed with age.

Silvicultural Characters

A pronounced light-demander. Sensitive to competition, particularly roots. Resists drought but sensitive to frost. Coppices and pollards vigorously. It is not browsed, withstands injuries from cutting and fire.

How to grow:
Regenerates from seeds, but the extent depends upon the climatic and soil factors. Prefers alluvial soil for germination. Seeds are dispersed through water. Baking and soaking stimulates germination. Needs protection from grazing and fire.
Nursery-raised seedlings are transplanted in April. Seeds are sown in well-prepared beds in moist areas or sunken beds in dry areas during March-June, depending upon the locality. Seeds for each bed of 12 m x 1.2 m varies from 5 to 12 kg depending upon the locality. Seeds are covered and mulched, and watered in dry areas. Watering is slowly reduced. Stumps from seedlings of 1-2cm thick are prepared with 1.5-5.0 cm shoot and 15-25 cm taproot without lateral roots and planted during rains; split-halves also give satisfactory results. Sprouted stumps raised in April in polythene-tubes give better results. Site is prepared by burning the slash and, with good rainfall of 150cm, 2.6m x 2.6m is suitable. Depending upon moisture, the stumps are planted in crowbar holes or 30cm3 pits. NPK (1:2:4) is also given in latertic soils.

Uses:

• For soil reclamation, control of erosion; recommended for and grown under agro- and social forestry. Agricultural crops, which do not have an adverse effect on teak, such as maize, hill paddy, chillies, horse gram, ragi, etc., can be cultivated for 1-2 years in between teak. Also grown for shelter belts, windbreaks and as hedge.
• Timber : One of the most important hardwoods the world over. Poles, piles, ship-building, all types of construction, bridge-building, coach-building, railways, frames, paneling, houses, various grades of plywood, particle-boards, fire-boards, furniture, cabinet-making, lorry-bodies, carts, carriages, mathematical instruments, violin-keys, long neck of sitar and body of harmonium, agricultural implements; chip boards of satisfactory strength and paper for writing and printing can be made form the waste wood-shavings. Activated charcoal can be made from sawdust.
• Is a good firewood, but is not used (sapwood, 4989 kcal; heartwood, 5535 kcal/kg). Charcoal can also be made.
• Seeds yield a fatty oil (2%), and promotes hair-growth; extract used as a lotion for eye-troubles.
